Hydronic Heating systems - Never be cold again
If you've ever experienced the luxury of a heated floorslab, or stepping from the shower into a warm towel, on a cold winters day, you'll know why Hydronic Heating systems are becoming very popular.
There are no drafts from forced air movement, you are just gently bathed in a warm environment. It's safe for all the family and great for people with allergies.
Water can be heated by GAS, LPG, Wood,
Solar, Ground-Sourced
(Geothermal) Heat Pump, Water-Sourced, Air Sourced
Heat Pump, or even a combination of one or more of these.
For Australian conditions outside of natural GAS area's,
we generally recommend Air Sourced Heat Pumps as they
provide the greatest overall control, sustainability
and cost efficiency compared to straight LPG, Wood,
and electric systems.
Skyline Energy pioneered the use of air sourced heat pumps
for hydronic heating and continue to lead the field.
The Coefficient of Performance (COP) is simply a way
of measuring the efficiency of something. It is the
ratio of energy in vs energy out. A COP
of 5 means 5x units of energy out for 1x unit in. In
our case with air-to-water heat-pumps, the difference
in the numbers is the energy harnessed from the air
- at COP 5, 5kW out comes from 1kW of electricity and
4kW of "solar" (heat) energy from the air.
As you can see, there are lots of factors that affect
the COP of a heat-pump:
Skyline Energy Cold Climate model air sourced heat pumps are the trusted name in non GAS hydronics throughout Australia, and despite what you may have heard can efficiently heat water hot enough for hydronic heating radiators and towel rails!
Warning: Never buy a heat-pump that has an electric element - check first!
3-in-1 Heat Pump Systems
Hydronic Heating - Potable hot water heating - AND Refrigerated
Air-Conditioning (Cooling) all from the same unit,
sounds too good to be true . . . maybe it is!
"Three-in-one" air-sourced heat pumps are coming onto
the market that claim very high efficiency. What
they don't tell you is that they also use electric back-up
elements that totally destroy the efficiency. To
make-up for an undersized heat pump, AND to maintain
the potable hot water temperature, some 3-in-1 units
can use up to 3x 3kW electric elements for heating!
If you want to maintain efficiency, it's better to have
a correctly sized (and that usually means "bigger")
heat-pump.
We also recommend keeping the potable hot water seperate,
and using either a Solar-Boosted GAS, or high efficiency heat pump
Some want a wood-fired hydronic system:
Heat Pump Wood Boiler back-up System
Instead of the traditional electric element backup,
why not use a heat-pump that will provide the same (or
more) energy but consume 60-70% less electricty!
How does this work
The wood boiler system heats water in a storage tank
which supplies the hydronic panels or floorcoils with
hot water. When the fire dies down and the water starts
to cool, and if the hydronics needs more heat, the control
system will fire-up the heat-pump to replace the heat
from the fire. Once the water in the tank reaches its
optimum temperature, (with or without a rekindled fire)
the heat-pump is automaticay switched off.
Best of both worlds
Sizing the heat Pump depends on whether you want just
boosting, (a small heat pump like the SX-10) or a heat
pump that gives you the flexibility to use either wood
or dedicated heat pump whenever you want.
Had
Solar Electricity installed but lost your off-peak hot
water tarif?
Now
paying full day-tarif for your electric hot water ?
Then
it's now time to upgrade to a heat-pump hot water unit!
If you install Solar
Electricity you will probably lose your off-peak
hot water tarif, so if you still have a std. electric
HWS you could be throwing money away. Maximise your
solar investment by installing one of our high performance
GAS/Solar or heat-pump hot water systems.
At Skyline Energy over the last 10yrs we've learned a lot about heating water. To us, solar hot water is not just about slapping some collectors on the roof - there are some really bad systems out there. We continually research, analyse, and develop better ways to do the job, so we can offer you only the very best systems.
There are many variables to consider before choosing the optimum system, it's a specialist job so please let us do that for you.
Change to Heat Pump or Solar NOW and cut rising energy bills
At Skyline Energy, we’re proud to have helped thousands
of people reduce their power bills, and make sustainable
living a part of their lives. Since 1999 we have also
helped people learn more about the financial, lifestyle
and environmental benefits of home-made energy.
If you want to Save Energy, Save on utility
bills, AND get a rebate - DO IT NOW!
Heat Pump or GAS/Solar - we've got you covered, and big rebates available on both.
Australia's best evacuated-tube solar boosted systems with locally made marine grade stainless steel storage tanks, and Bosch GAS units.
If you have an existing electric system we will probably
offer you a hi-quality hi-efficiency heat pump upgrade
- either a locally made split-system with stainless
steel or enamelled tank, or a compact model with high
quality enamelled tank.
The 417Lt split-system is ideal for larger households,
and R290 Hydrocarbon models now available.
Harnessing free energy from the sun - even in the dark!
Save Energy, Save Money, Cut Greenhouse Emissions, with the best Air Sourced Heat Pump
The solar hot water systems we're all used to seeing on the roof, are not always the best environmental solution!
Our 264-SS, 327-SS, and 300-MS heat pumps are uniquely quiet & efficient, using a small amount of energy to collect the abundant heat that the sun puts into the air we breathe, and may be the overall best system for your specific situation. Industry leading performance means higher rebates are available for our heat pumps.
Why we don't recommend Solar Boosted Electric systems:
avge solar-boosted electric produces 33 tonnes CO2 emissions
IMPORTANT NOTICE
VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT HOT WATER REBATES DUE TO CLOSE 31 May 2013
STC & VEECs rebates still
available
Don't panic-buy Solar Hot Water,
Heat-Pump rebates not affected!
Save your roofspace for Solar Electricity,
and install a heat-pump on the ground - higher return
on investment.
In other areas results
may vary, but in almost all conditions, our heat-pumps
will outperform other heat-pumps and solar boosted electric systems.
Conventional Solar-Boosted Electric Hot Water systems actually rely on inefficient Electric-Element boosters - especially when you need it most IN WINTER!
A heat pump will:
NOT put you at risk
ensure your water ALWAYS reaches and maintains safe temperature
kill or prevent harmful bacteria
save you money
You don't have to worry about leaving the booster off - there isn't one.
Our 264-SS & 327-SS high efficiency, long life,
split-system heat-pumps are accredited for solar rebates,
nothing on your roof, robust, more efficient, and simple
to install. Our 261-MS, 326-MS, & 417-MS split-systems
use the same heat-pump but have glass-lined steel tanks.
Our 300-MS compact heat pumps offer a great low-cost
alternative, but still with great overall efficiency.
If you currently have an off-peak electric hot water service, the best solution is to upgrade NOW - to one of our sensational heat-pumps (or if you have GAS available, perhaps a solar boosted gas system)
". . . As most Australians who own a roof can currently
borrow money at around 7% or less, this means the cost
of electricity from rooftop solar for the typical Australian
is now about 12 cents a kilowatt-hour, which is less
than half the average cost of grid electricity in Australia."

Latest Technology Micro Inverter Systems Available
Although they can cost a litte more than traditional inverters, Microinverter systems can increase the overall power output of the same panel array by up to a whopping 25%!
1x Micro Inverter is connected to 1 or 2 solar panels, and converts
the low-voltage DC panel output to 240v AC right there at the
panel
Traditional inverter systems typically shut off during low-light
conditions, such as the morning and evening or during thick cloud
cover and they require a minimum amount of incoming power to operate
efficiently. Micro inverters resolve this problem. (more usable
electricity generated from the same panels) During these times,
the micro inverter stores up the trickle of power coming from
the panel, until there’s enough to send a burst of energy - highly
efficient operation.
The Micro inverter also solves the problem of reduced string
output when one or more panels are partially shaded.
Add solar to your existing hot water system:
Solar Evacuated Tube modules can be added to almost
any existing hot water storage system. Before buying
tubes, we recommend discussing this with your intended
plumber/installer. Generally, if the tubes are mounted
below your storage tank, they will auto-siphon. If the
storage tank is below the tubes you will need a pump
and controller.
We can supply you with 16-tube module(s), (with or
without pump and controller), that can simply be attached
to your roof and plumbed into your existing system.
The controller switches the pump on when the water
in the solar manifold (thats the black-covered thing
at the top of the tubes) is hotter than the water in
the storage tank. The pump/controller will need a 10amp
power socket.
Note: Solar rebates are not available for adding these modules to an existing hot water system.
Latest Evacuated Tube Technology with over 48 metres of copper heat absorber in every Evacuated U Tube Solar Collector module !!
Each solar collector module has no removable connections, so no possible leaks, and is maintenance free. The solar heat generating evacuated glass tubes are just sleeves that push over the copper U tubes. The high heating efficiency of the U Tube design is obtained because the water flows into the manifold AND down and up each and every evacuated U Tube, unlike other evacuated tube solar collectors.
Under ideal conditions, a good solar boosted hot water system can provide almost free hot water for 3 or 4 months of the year - depending on location and usage. When conditions are not ideal and/or if your hot water requirement can not be fully met and the outgoing water temperature falls below safe levels, the system will operate its heater.
Big rebates for Solar Hot Water systems still available! Thanks to solar rebates the overall implementation cost of these systems is reduced substantially - while the rebate lasts. If you are considering changing to solar there's no time like NOW!
If you have a natural gas HWS, or are living off the grid (RAPS systems), then we will probably recommend an upgrade to our new range of evacuated tube solar boosted GAS/LPG systems.
(If you have access to reticulated gas but have problems like shading, inappropriate facing or insufficient roof space, then perhaps a high efficiency heat pump should be considered)
We don't recommend solar boosted electric systems as our heat pumps are generally cheaper overall to buy, install and operate, and can be environmentally a better solution.
Note: Solar Tube systems are not suitable at all for Hydronic Heating - We have other options for hydronics - see below.
Each collector module has 16 tubes. Each system has 2 or 3 modules
